Myths about porcelain veneers debunked by our team
In the world of cosmetic dental care, there are many options available for you to restore your smile, or enhance it. Some of the most well-known ones are whitening the teeth or closing gaps in your smile with dental implants.
There is also an option which can whiten your smile and close minor gaps in between your teeth, whilst also concealing cracks and chips. This is one of the most versatile of all cosmetic options and is known as a porcelain laminate.
At Doctor Bobby Chhoker, we are proud to be able to offer our patients porcelain laminates also known as porcelain veneers. These are versatile and straightforward cosmetic coverings, which provide a range of benefits which go far beyond simple cosmetic advantages.
But like most cosmetic procedures, they have attracted a fair amount of attention and there are many mistruths about this procedure online. So, in this article, our team provides insight into some of the most common myths that surround porcelain veneers.
Myth 1- Having them fitted hurts
The fitting of porcelain veneers should certainly not hurt. The procedure itself will involve our team gently sanding the front of the teeth that the laminates are going to be attached to. This is to provide an abrasive surface which the dental cement can then grip. We will then place the laminate onto the cement and allow it to set.
There should be no discomfort, but if you have concerns we can apply a topical numbing agent beforehand. Once the cement has been set, the laminates can be used to bite and chew food.
Myth 2- They will fall off
Dental cement is pretty hardy and so a laminate should not fall off. But if you spot your laminate wobbling or can feel it moving, then please contact our team to have it refitted. It is also worth noting that there are dental conditions which can cause laminates to fall off prematurely, such as gum disease and tooth decay.
Myth 3- They stain easily
A porcelain laminate will not stain easily. This is because the porcelain itself is not as porous as enamel, which can stain when exposed to tannins over an extended period. So having laminates fitted can offer a long-term solution to dental whitening.
Myth 4- Anyone can have them fitted
As briefly mentioned earlier, there are a few dental issues that can cause the laminates to fall off and they can also prevent you from having them fitted. These are tooth decay and gum disease. Both of which will need to be treated by our team before we fit porcelain laminates, as both of these disorders can cause the laminates to fall off prematurely and can also damage your mouth.
Myth 5- They are expensive
It is concerning for many patients who want to have porcelain laminates fitted that the option may be expensive. However, our team at Bondi Junction can offer suitable patient financing options. Therefore, you can spread the cost of this treatment over several months without it impacting your budget.
