Myths about dental implants debunked by our team
When you have missing teeth as an adult, you will probably be looking for a permanent solution to your cosmetic and oral functionality woes; after all, you can’t chew an apple with no teeth! And if you have perused the internet for an answer, you will have invariably stumbled upon oral or tooth implants. While the internet is great at providing facts about this procedure, it is also rather good at offering mistruths and myths as well and this can deter you from seeking the procedure as a solution to your missing teeth.
At Dr Bobby Chhoker, we know a great deal about dental implants as we have been improving smiles with implants for 20 years. So, if you feel like implants could help you, come visit our friendly team!
With that in mind, here, our team at Dr Bobby Chhoker debunks some of the most common myths surrounding dental implants.
Myth: having implants fitted is uncomfortable
When you come to us to have dental implants, we will always ensure that an anaesthetic is applied before we begin the procedure. Once at home, you may feel some minor bruising or aching around and under the implant site. This is to be expected and should resolve within a week. If it persists or worsens, please seek urgent medical attention as you may have an infection.
Myth: oral implants do not last long
With the correct aftercare, oral implants can last well over 15 years, making them the most permanent solution to missing teeth. To promote this longevity, you will need to brush them twice daily and visit our team biannually for checkups, while also refraining from smoking and drinking.
Myth: they look fake
Oral implants are designed to blend in with your surrounding natural teeth. If you want to have oral implants that are whiter (very common in people who are having entire sets of dentures stabilised), then we can provide that too. But we will always aim to make your smile look as natural as possible.
Myth: implants are only for older people
Implants are for anyone over the age of 18 who has lost a tooth. We have helped people of all ages improve their smiles using this restorative technique and you will be glad to learn that if you are an older person, there is little to prevent you from having implants fitted! All that is usually required is a healthy jaw bone, good oral health and good general health to successfully fit implants. If this sounds like you, call us today to arrange a consultation.
Myth: they will become infected
It is very uncommon for oral implants to become infected. However, if you have concerns about infection, we may be able to give you antibiotics once your implants are fitted. Remember, you have to keep your implant site debris-free to reduce the risk of infection, so rinse daily with salt water. If you feel ill, or hot, have extensive discomfort or have an unpleasant taste or odour in your mouth, seek urgent medical attention as these may be symptoms of an infection.
