Key reasons to attend check-ups with our dentist
When many people get a reminder text or message that they need to attend their biannual dental check-up, they initially begin planning ways to avoid it!
For some dental patients, it is a procedure that can induce feelings of dislike and for a slim minority can cause panic attacks. But most people view it as an inconvenience and do not see the point in attending regular dental check-ups if they are not in discomfort.
But as the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure!
At Dr Bobby Chhoker’s practice, we believe in preventing dental issues before they occur and so we are firm advocates of biannual check-ups with our dental team in Bondi Junction. Not only for adults but for children and even toddlers, to ensure that oral health is maintained and that no secondary issues occur.
What are some of the key reasons to attend dental check-ups every 6 months? Here are our five main reasons why you should not skip your biannual check-ups.
Decay
Tooth decay is a common condition that our dentist sees and can prevent at a biannual check-up. It is caused by an excess level of bacteria in the mouth, eating through the enamel and penetrating the dentine. In most cases, it can lead to discomfort and at a much later stage, an oral abscess. Decay often goes unnoticed by patients, and therefore you will need our dentist to assess the condition of your teeth and treat decay before it develops into something more serious.
Gum disease
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and as you may have guessed, it can be prevented by biannual check-ups. Our team can advise you on better flossing techniques, better dental brushing techniques and can prescribe antibacterial mouthwash. In severe cases, we can refer you to our hygienist, who can provide you with a scale and polish, which will reduce and reverse minor cases of gum disease.
Restorative checks
If you have fillings or crowns, then they need to be checked to ensure that they are not loose or that decay has not set in underneath them. Once again, this is another benefit of regular checks with our dental team. If a restorative is loose and decay has set in underneath, it can involve a more invasive treatment which could have been avoided if caught at an earlier stage.
Oral cancer screening
Oral cancer is on the rise in the Western world and luckily, it is one of the easiest cancers to detect and treat. Our team will always provide oral cancer screening as part of any check-up to ensure that any mysterious lumps, bumps and patches of skin are explored. If necessary, we will also refer you to a specialist for further diagnostics.
Advice and further treatment
An oral check-up also provides you, as the patient, with the opportunity to discuss other matters with our team that go beyond simple dental care. Issues relating to snoring or pursuing cosmetic dental treatments such as Invisalign or dental implants can be explored, both of which can only be offered if you have a solid base to start from and your dental health is good.
