FAQs about dental implants answered by our team
Having a missing tooth or teeth can be troublesome, especially if the missing tooth is located at the front of your mouth and impacts your smile.
In years gone by, you could have had these gaps fitted with a prosthetic such as a fitted or removable crown. In recent times, the techniques have updated somewhat and now, you can have a more permanent prosthetic placed in the form of a dental or oral implant.
At Dr Bobby Chhoker, we have extensive experience in fitting dental implants in Bondi Junction and can provide you with advice and tips on how to care for your implants. We will aim to ensure that the fitting itself is as comfortable as possible and will, of course, be on hand to answer any aftercare concerns that you may have too.
So, with that in mind, what are some of the questions that we have been asked about dental implants? Read on to find out.
I’ve heard it is uncomfortable – is it?
The fitting of dental implants sounds more uncomfortable than it is.
Prior to the surgical fitting, we will ensure that the area is numbed, so you will not feel any of the incisions, but you may feel some pressure.
Once the surgery is over and you are at home recovering, the sensation you experience will likely feel similar to having a tooth extracted. If you notice any extensive discomfort, please contact our team as soon as possible to have an appointment, as you may have an infection.
How long do the implants last?
With correct aftercare, which will be explored later, your oral implants should easily last up to and over 15 years.
There are some conditions which can shorten the lifespan of implants, however, such as gum disease and illnesses that impact bone loss.
Can I have them fitted if I have osteoporosis?
It may be possible to fit oral implants if you have osteoporosis. However, before we book you in for the treatment, we will need to enquire about the level of osteoporosis that you have and may need to contact your doctor for more information. We will also need information relating to any medication that you are taking to manage this condition.
In most cases, osteoporosis can be an issue relating to the longevity of the implants; as the bone recedes, the implants may become loose and fall out. If you are looking to have teeth restored that are located on the upper jaw, then you may be suitable for zygomatic implants.
What is aftercare like?
The aftercare of oral implants is straightforward. Between the fitting itself and the placement of the prosthetics (around 3-9 months), you will need to keep an eye out for signs of infection, such as discolouration and swelling. You will need to brush the implants as you would your regular teeth and attend check-ups with our team.
Are they expensive?
Many people are concerned that oral implants are expensive. But our team is able to offer finance to our suitable patients, so if you are interested in oral implants, give us a call today to discuss payment options.
