Here, our team answers common questions about having dental implants fitted. So read on to learn more!

Is the fitting uncomfortable?

A key concern that many patients have relating to the fitting of dental implants is that it will hurt.

The surgery to fit implants will always be performed with the aid of local anaesthetic, or sedation if you are a nervous patient. So, you won’t feel a thing.

Once you are at home afterwards, the sensation you experience will feel similar to dental extraction. And the gums are going to be a bit tender. For this, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol.

If you have concerns that an infection is occurring, contact our team immediately.

How long does the fusing take?

Once the implants are in place, the fusing will take anywhere from 3 to 9 months.

This will vary based on your general health, age and the rate at which your body creates new bone cells. If after 12 months, we find that there is no sign of the implants fusing, we will have to remove them and consider other options.

Can I have oral implants if I’m over the age of 50?

Yes, you can!

Oral implants do not have an upper age limit restriction. And as long as you have no gum disease or tooth decay, our team will be happy to fit them.

One of the things that we will need to check for before we fit the implants is the condition and density of your jawbone. If there is not enough jawbone to support an oral implant being fitted, then we will opt for an alternative restorative treatment.

How long will they last?

With good aftercare, oral implants can easily last up to and over 15 years.

If you notice that your oral implants are wobbling, or that they appear to be loose, then you will need to contact our team for a same-day appointment to assess the underlying cause.

It is worth noting that alongside good oral hygiene, you can also promote the longevity of implants by not smoking and avoiding drinking to excess.

Are they hard to look after?

No, actually one of the key reasons why oral implants are so popular is because they are easy to care for.

All you need to do to maintain them is to brush them twice a day, floss them and of course, see our team every 6 months for a check-up.

The key thing to remember with oral implants is that they can become loose due to gum disease. So if your gums are inflamed or you are showing other symptoms of gum disease, contact our team for a check-up.
