Dental Implants: Common FAQs Answered

Dr. Bobby Chhoker

Many people in their adult years have a missing tooth or missing teeth. This can be caused by decay or trauma to the mouth. Irrespective of the cause, the majority of dental patients are looking for ways to ensure that the gap is closed permanently, without the need for adhesives or removable prosthetics like dentures or bridges.

Luckily, there is now an option that can offer a permanent solution to gaps in the teeth without the need for dental adhesives; these are known as dental implants.

At Dr Bobby Chhoker’s practice, we are proud to be able to offer dental implants in Bondi Junction to patients for whom the treatment is suitable. Implants are fitted and fused to the jaw to then allow you to bite into food and smile without any problem. Hence why they have become one of the most popular restorative methods that we can offer.

It is likely that you will have some questions. So, here our team aims to answer five key questions that we received about dental implants.

Is the procedure risky?

Any treatment incurs a level of risk, however, dental implants have been around for a long time and the materials and technologies around them have constantly improved over time. If you’re concerned about having dental implants fitted then chat to our friendly team who will be more than happy to address your concerns.

Does it hurt to have implants fitted?

Before fitting your oral implants, we will ensure that the area is numbed using a local anaesthetic. As mentioned before, if you are a nervous patient we can offer sedation methods. In short, the procedure itself will not be uncomfortable. Once you are at home afterwards, you may feel a sensation similar to bruising, which should be mitigated with the use of over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol.

Are all patients suitable for oral implants?

In order to be suitable for oral implants, our team will need to assess that you have a healthy jawbone and that you have enough jawbone to support the implants. This will be ascertained by an X-ray. Any other dental issues such as tooth decay or gum disease also need to be treated before receiving oral implants. We will also enquire about any medications you are taking and any other health issues that you may have.

But there are no upper age limits on oral implants and we have found that most of our patients are suitable for them.

How long do they last?

With correct aftercare (which is not too tricky and revolves around twice-daily brushing and regular check-ups), oral implants can last up to and over 15 years. Just keep an eye out for early signs of gum disease which can cause implants to fail prematurely.

Are they expensive?

Many people have concerns about the costs of oral implants, but at our practice, we can offer 0% finance (terms and conditions apply, ask our friendly team for more details) to suitable patients to fund the fitting of your oral implants. So you can spread the cost into affordable monthly instalments.
